Reenacting with the Sixth North Carolina

Does reenacting look like fun to you? You will find that reenactors, including the members of the Sixth North Carolina, are an amazingly varied lot from all walks of life, united by a passion for history. To understand our hobby better, you may wish to read Interested in Joining the 6th North Carolina Regiment? by recruiter Brett Bondurant and An Inside View of Reenacting by member Jim Daniel.

The 6th NC Regiment travels to historic sites in the eastern United States, primarily in the Carolinas and Virginia. We primarily participate in living history and battle reenactments, but also in parades, ceremonies, documentaries, movies, school demonstrations and honor guards. Members engage in stimulating conversations with each other and the visiting public, both educating and making Colonial America come alive. And we have fun doing it.

If you, too, are interested in reenacting the American Revolution, we invite you to join us in the 18th Century.

How do you start?

First, choose an event from our calendar. Some events are better suited for beginners than others. We suggest that you contact any member that you know or an officer, particularly the recruiting officer (joinus@6nc.org).

If you wish just to observe the 6th NC, attending for a few hours in modern clothing is fine. However, it will limit your participation, as you will not be able to eat in our camp and may have to pay entrance fees. By coming for the duration of the event and "dressing out" you will get the full flavor of the reenacting experience.

No one is expected to immediately buy a colonial outfit. If you would like to try 18th century clothing, the regiment has loaner clothes for both men and women. We will help you grow into the hobby as you are willing and able. To borrow clothing, please contact us at least a week in advance.

Before attending, review the General Rules. As a family-oriented organization, crude behavior, drinking, drugs, and foul language are not tolerated. During the hours that the public is attending an event, remove or hide from modern items. Fun, authenticity, and safety are the order of the day--but in the event of a tie, safety wins.

What Do You Bring?

  • The clothes you will wear
  • Eating utensils (wooden bowls and spoons with tin cups or plain ceramic cups work admirably)
  • Sleeping gear, including a ground tarp
  • Personal equipment or crafts for demonstrations (you may not have anything at your first event--don't worry, you will stay busy)
  • A willing attitude to pitch in and help
  • Camp fees of $6.00 per person per day

The regiment provides authentic cookware and tents.
